Heaven Must Have Sent You - the Elgins

Surely the best opening line in pop

I've cried so many endless nights

just holding my pillowtight

unless you count

once upon a time you dressed so fine, you threw the bums a dime in your prime didn't you?

Or

DeepdowninLouisianaclosetoNewOrleanswaybackupinthewoodsamongtheevergreens

Or

Close your eyes and I'll miss you, tomorrow I'll kiss you ...............(You can’t do that on Karoake)

Or

I'm gonna tell Aunt Mary about Uncle John, he claims he has the music, but he has a lot of fun

Or even

Sugar Pie Honey Bunch

but my vote still goes with this, the slightly querulous voice of Sandra Edwards with the quickpace counterpoint of "pillowtight" against the double emphasis of "so many" and "endless nights”, you can feel her curled up in bed, hurt.

Total merge of poetic phrasing and music in the way that Holland / Dozier / Holland achieved over and over again with Motown in the 60's. Bliss.
