This was the band in which Sam Cooke first became famous although they had been doing very well for 24 years before he joined. After Sam's arrival, there were quite a few raised eyebrows when the churches were packed with young women for the band's visits, but generally the Soul Stirrers' ability to swell the congregation meant that they were revered by black clergy throughout the states.
And no wonder - with Sam's passionate yet beautifully controlled vocal - how could you not be moved?
